Have a Chat, Help Give Back through 2-1-1 San Bernardino County

May 22, 2012

A 2-1-1 operator in southeastern Michigan refers a caller to important local resources.

For over five years now, 2-1-1 San Bernardino County has been providing life-changing information to individuals and families throughout California. Just as 9-1-1 provides callers with immediate access to emergency information, 2-1-1 operators are trained to quickly provide callers with information on community, health, and social services programs in their local area. As 2-1-1 specialists have found in call centers across the country, oftentimes information of this sort is just as vital as emergency information.

Nearly 50 separate counties are served by 2-1-1 in California alone.

Though all 2-1-1 call centers do much to help their communities, 2-1-1 San Bernardino County is especially proud of the lengths they’ve gone to in the name of impacting the Inland Empire. “2-1-1 answers about 65,000 calls a year, and 38% of those calls involve households with children under the age of 5,” notes 2-1-1 San Bernardino County Operations Manager Susan Arevalo. “2-1-1 San Bernardino is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and all of our Community Resource Specialists are bilingual to better assist the residents of San Bernardino County. 2-1-1 also supports the county’s Office of Emergency Services by providing information in times of disaster.”

Still, the agency believes it can do even more to help the people of San Bernardino County receive quick and relevant information, and they need your help to do it! 2-1-1 is looking for a few gifted conversationalists to serve as Satisfaction Specialist Volunteers for the San Bernardino County office, conducting brief conversations with former callers who have expressed interest in providing feedback. This feedback will be used by 2-1-1 to help shape future practices that ensure callers walk away satisfied with powerful, accurate information that helps them meet their specific needs.

2-1-1 helps callers get connected and get answers with one quick dial of the phone!

All volunteers are encouraged to express interest, but certain qualifications do tend to make candidates stand out. “We are looking for enthusiastic, committed volunteers who enjoy talking to people, who have basic computer skills, and who are dedicated to helping others,” says Arevalo.

All volunteers will walk away from this experience knowing that their volunteer work helped an incredibly worthwhile program better serve the needs of the local community.
